ViscerA PRESENTS INDUCTION
Vancouver’s Gutsy New Dance Production Company Kicks off Halloweekend with a Thrilling and Spine-Chilling Launch Party and Fundraiser.
Viscera’s immersive inauguration, Induction, will give audiences a taste of the terror in store and a chance to support their mission to empower local creators and entertain daring audiences through haunting and horrific movement-based productions, all year round.
Induction will welcome fright-fanatics and arts-lovers alike to celebrate the launch of Vancouver’s new horror-based dance company - Viscera. Harnessing the capacity of physical, embodied performance styles to tell abstract stories and convey unexplainable feelings, Viscera will bring our fears to stage through heart-stopping, gasp-inducing, stomach-turning, gut-wrenching productions that will captivate and unnerve.
Kicking off Halloweekend on Friday, October 28, this bizarre and bewitching fundraising event, taking place at The Morrissey, will feature dance performances, an art auction, prize giveaways, themed food and drink specials, and more. A core part of Viscera’s mission is to produce high-quality shows with fairly compensated performers and contributors and this evening is a chance for friends, family, fans and collaborators who believe in this idea to support and help raise seed funds to get Viscera off the ground and onto the stage.
Viscera has long been a dream (or perhaps a nightmare) of Nikki Sherwood, AKA Nikki Viscera. Nikki is a passionate and dynamic storyteller who finds beauty in the weird and has been creating and performing since she can remember. She brings to this new endeavour her love of the bizarre and the derelict. As an experienced heels dancer, Nikki is not afraid to explore the nuanced relationship between sexy and scary in her effort to convey complex feelings and tell intangible stories. She is hungry to create opportunities to escape and explore the edges of our comfort zones.
“When something truly scares us, there is an immediate feeling of helplessness, a feeling that we are out of control, that we’ve lost our sense of security. Through horror we explore themes that are bigger than us. When we willingly allow ourselves to step into that mindset and to step away from what’s comfortable, we are actually (on a small scale) facing fear. We are choosing to experience that overwhelming feeling, to explore the unexpected as unexplained, and when it’s all over relief washes over us. You’re taking control back from what once felt uncontrollable.” -Nikki Sherwood, Viscera Founder & Artistic Director
This is just the beginning. Viscera is eager to build a community, to explore various subgenres and to create powerful and impactful performances in diverse formats. Viscera expects to have their first full scale production hitting the stage in early 2023.
